Little League Baseball came to Alabama in 1950, when leagues were formed in Auburn and Demopolis. These two leagues faced off in a best 2-of-3 championship series that determined the state's inaugural champion. More leagues were quickly formed around the state, and Alabama's fledgling charters were organized into a series of districts, and during the 1950s, upwards of eight Alabama district champions advanced to the state tournament.
In 1957, Little League Baseball reorganized its districts across the country, and created the district structure that is the root of how leagues are organized today. Four districts were initially formed in Alabama, but additional districts were added and folded over the next half-century as the number of leagues in the state ebbed and flowed. The Alabama champion during this era would advance to region tournament competition, where they would face champions from states throughout the South.
Today, the Alabama state champion advances to the Southeastern Region tournament in Warner Robins, Georgia, where they compete for the right to advance to the Little League World Series.
Eight Alabama leagues have qualified for the Little League World Series, including Birmingham Southside Little League, which won Alabama's only championship in 1953. Phenix City National Little League won the United States championship in 1999 with a team that included future major leaguers Colby and Cory Rasmus.
