Canadian Region Tournament Championship Game:

Glace Bay (NS) 4, Toronto High Park (ON) 0 (TITLE)

Summary:

Glace Bay jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the championship game, and the Maritime representative then rode the sparkling pitching of Jason Snow to a 4-0 victory over Toronto High Park. The win earned Glace Bay its fourth Canadian championship in an eight year span.

Glace Bay struck in the top of the first inning of the title game. Chad Warren led off the game with a double, and advanced to third on Kyle Clarke's sacrifice. After Snow drew a walk, Warren scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Lefty Adam Shibinette then extended the Colonels' lead with a two-run homer to left field. Glace Bay added a second inning run when Ryan Boutilier tripled in Anthony Sheppard.

After the initial outburst, the Colonels turned to Snow to stifle the High Park offense. Snow struck out twelve and allowed only two hits to earn his third victory of the national tournament. He finished the tourney with 31 strikeouts, and allowed only seven hits in 17 innings on the mound. Snow was also the tourney's leading hitter with a .622 average.

Both Glace Bay and High Park advanced to the title game with 4-1 records. Glace Bay opened by defeating Calgary Foothills 11-0 in a five inning contest on the tournament's opening day. Snow struck out ten and enjoyed the first of two straight 3-for-3 days at the plate in the win. The next day, Shibinette waited out a six hour rain delay and then scattered five hits and struck out twelve in a 5-1 win over defending Canadian champion North Vancouver Lynn Valley (BC).

Toronto High Park and Sher-Mont also opened the tournament with a pair of victories, and the Glace Bay-High Park matchup would give one team the inside track on a title game berth. Six foot tall Glace Bay right-hander Sandy Sparrow ensured that the Colonels would gain the victory by firing a no-hitter at the Braves in a 1-0 victory. Sparrow struck out 10 and walked five to outduel High Park pitcher Ian Jarvis. Glace Bay scored the game's only run in the sixth inning. Snow opened the inning with a double, but was caught in a rundown between second and third on Sparrow's one out bouncer to short. Sparrow advanced to second before Snow was tagged out on the play. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch. Glace Bay sealed the win when catcher Daniel McDonald threw out a runner trying to score from third on a pitch to the backstop.

The next day, Glace Bay clinched a title game berth by drubbing previously unbeaten Sher-Mont 14-3. Snow threw a two-hitter and struck out nine in five innings of work, and was 3-for-5 at the plate. Ryan Young added a pair of doubles for the Colonels. Glace Bay's win ensured the Colonels of a berth in the title game, while the winner of the final round matchup between 3-1 High Park and 3-1 Sher-Mont would determine the other finalist. Jonathan Lockwood's fourth inning grand slam broke a scoreless tie and propelled High Park into the title game with a 6-4 win over the Quebec champions.

Glace Bay's four Canadian championships since the first nationwide Canadian Region tournament was held in 1965 is second only to the five titles won by the Trail (BC) Little League.
