NOTE: Eight Colorado leagues participated in the international tournament in 1961. With the state tournament scheduled to be held in Cortez in the far Southwestern part of the state, officials sought to minimize travel by having four Eastern Colorado leagues play area tournament qualifiers prior to the state tournament. Only the winners of these games would then travel to Cortez, and the two area tournament winners were given opening round byes at the state tournamaent.

Leadville's opening round state tournament game against Skyline was originally scheduled as an area tournament qualifier, and similar to the other area tournament games, only the winner would have advanced to Cortez. However, the game was shifted to a state tournament game as Leadville was a late entrant into the tournament and had just a week to prepare for the tournament. Leadville entered as a replacement for Northglenn, which withdrew after the tournament draw was established but prior to any games being played.
