Central East Maui Little League averaged a meager three runs per game at the 2013 Hawaii state tournament, and managed to top that number on just one occasion.

It was more than enough for the Valley Isle team to capture the championship flag.

Central East Maui allowed just six runs over the course of five games, and edged Waipio Little League, 2-0, in a winner-take-all championship game meeting at Honolulu Little League's Kilauea District Park on Oahu. The stifling pitching gave Central East Maui its third state championship in five years, and advanced the Hawaii winners to the West Region tournament in San Bernardino, California.

Pitchers Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa and Jacob Chong combined on a two-hitter in the tournament's final game, with Hoopii-Tuionetoa striking out nine and surrendering just one hit over five innings, and Chong closing out the victory despite allowing a hit in the sixth. Chong also played a role in Central East Maui's offense, as he scored on Micah Saki's pinch hit single that produced the game's second run.

The two hits allowed concluded a tournament in which Central's pitchers allowed four, four, four, three, and two hits. Kea Aguirre and Hoopii-Tuioneotoa combined on the four-hitter in the team's opener, a 3-2 victory over Kona Coast Little League. Kona Coast led 3-2 midway through the fourth inning, but Central East Maui tied the game in the bottom of that frame, and then won it in the sixth. Hoopii-Tuionetoa led off the sixth with a double, and after a strikeout, Justin Vicente doubled to left field to produce the walk-off win.

The next day, three Central pitchers combined on a four-hitter, as Central East Maui rebounded from an early deficit to top Aiea Little League, 7-2. Rayven Ruiz, Chong, and Cody Constantino handled the pitching duties for Maui, which trailed 2-0 through 3-1/2 innings but scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth to take control of the game.

In the fourth, Kainalu Kaililaau produced an RBI single that narrowed Aiea's lead to a single run, and Vicente then reversed the deficit with a two-run double. Saki followed with an RBI single. The next inning, Vicente drove in a pair of runs with a double, and Constantino capped the win with a run-scoring single.

The win lifted Central East Maui into the winner's bracket final, where Waipio scored in the top of the first inning to grab an early advantage. But Central East Maui pitchers Andre Beaudoin and Chong shut down the Waipio offense for the balance of the game, and the Maui team's offense warmed up in the late innings. Ruiz slammed a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, and then Central East Maui added two in the fifth as Aguirre scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error and Cade Kalehuawehu scored an insurance run on a wild pitch.

The win lifted Central East Maui into the Hawaii championship game for the fourth time in five years, but Waipio earned a rematch with a 4-3 victory over Kaneohe Little League, and then forced the series to a deciding game with a 1-0 win over Central East Maui in the first championship series meeting.

Both Waipio pitcher Shaydon Kubo and Kaililaau, Central East Maui's starter, surrendered just three hits in the game. Waipio produced the only run of the contest in the second, when Blake Hirake opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.

The next day, it was Central East Maui's turn to post a shutout, as Hoopii-Tuionetoa and Chong combined to punch their team's ticket to the mainland.

Central East Maui became the seventh Maui league to win the Hawaiian championship in the major baseball division. Waipio was making the league's eighth championship game appearance, and first since the league won the 2010 state championship.
