Cherokee edged Grant County 3-0 in the opening game of the 1999 Kansas state tournament, then drilled the Western Kansas representatives by a 13-1 score the next evening to claim the state title. It was Cherokee's first Kansas title since 1982.
Zack Collingsworth and Tony Brisbin keyed Cherokee's win in game one. Collingsworth allowed only five hits and went the distance on the mound for Cherokee. Collingsworth struck out ten and did not issue any walks in the victory.
Cherokee managed only four hits against Grant County pitcher Tyler Parks, but scratched together three runs in the third inning. Bryan Allen led off the inning with a walk, and Jake Dainty followed with a base hit. Collingsworth was hit by a pitch to load the bases, before Brisbin's two-out single plated Allen and Jake Dainty with the game's first runs. Collingsworth later scored on a passed ball to complete the scoring.
In the second game, Cherokee raced to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning and pounded out 11 hits overall while clinching the title. Jake Dainty led the Cherokee attack with four singles, while Collingsworth and Trevor Atkinson contributed triples. David Dainty tossed a three-hitter for the victors.
