An electrical malfunction plunged Baxter Springs' Little League field into darkness just before the start of the Kansas state championship game between Girard and Frontenac Little Leagues.

No matter -- Girard and Frontenac brought their own power supply.

The two teams combined for 28 hits and six home runs. Girard blew a seven-run lead, and Frontenac missed an opportunity to close out the game when they carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the end, Girard had just enough to push past Frontenac, 12-11 in seven innings. The win gave Girard its second-ever state championship in the major baseball division, and advanced the team into the Midwest Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Four of Girard's five wins en route to the state champion came over Frontenac, and the final meeting between the two featured a series of momentum swings. Girard used a six-run second inning rally to open up a 7-1 lead, then added two more in the third to widen their advantage to 9-2. But Frontenac scored three times in the fifth to narrow the gap, then took the lead with a five-run burst in the sixth.

Girard tied the game in the bottom of the inning, and, after Frontenac again moved in front with a run in the seventh, scored twice in the bottom of the frame to clinch the title.

Cody Mein drove in the tying run with a single, and came around to score on the same play following a throwing error to secure the win. It was Girard's third walkoff victory in their four meetings with Frontenac.

Camden McFarland's grand slam home run sparked Girard's six-run second inning rally, and run-scoring hits from Dakota Lopez and Ryan Hughes widened the lead in the third.

Frontenac slammed three solo home runs in the fifth, including a leadoff shot by Peyton Brown and back-to-back blows by Jake Wilvert and Cal Evans. Brown, who had also homered in the first inning, added his third home run of the game in the sixth when his two-run blast helped to give Frontenac a brief 10-9 advantage.

Hughes was four-for-five to pace a twelve-hit Girard attack, while Lopez and Mein added a pair of hits each.

Girard had defeated Frontenac twice in area tournament competition, and both teams then advanced to the final four alongside teams from Kansas' other pool. The teams quickly set up a rematch by winning their opening round games at state, with Girard topping Galena Little League, 10-4, and Frontenac downing homestanding Baxter Springs.

Pitcher Ethan Goff paced Girard's win over Galena, allowing just two runs in 4-1/3 innings of work. Girard scored in five of their six offensive innings, and cemented the win when five consecutive two-out hits in the sixth produced three runs. Hughes singled to spark the rally, before Ethan Jahay delivered an RBI double. Wade Boatman plated Jahay with a single, and after Ty Norris added another hit, Mein's run-scoring single completed the scoring.

Girard then defeated Frontenac, 14-4, in the winner's bracket final, before Frontenac bounced back with a win to force a rematch.

It marked the second consecutive year that Frontenac finished as the Kansas runner-up. Cherokee Community Little League defeated Frontenac, 16-10, in the 2011 state championship game.

Girard's only other state championship in the major baseball division came in 2003, when the league celebrated its inaugural year of affiliation with Little League Baseball by defeating Southwest Kansas Little League from Hugoton, 9-0, to sweep a best-of-three series.
