What's New

(June 2021) -- A year after cancelling all tournament play due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Little League Baseball has announced plans for the 2021 international tournament. Following consultation with an advisory committee comprised of outside experts, Little League Baseball has decided to hold the 2021 Little League World Series and all of its qualifying tournaments for the Little League Baseball and Softball divisions (age 10-12 years). Other age divisions will end play at the state tournament level. For 2021 only, the Little League World Series will involve only U.S.-based leagues, with the top two finishers in each region advancing to the Little League World Series.

Little League Baseball has provided guidelines around attendance at the series and COVID protocols for tournament officials and volunteers -- details can be found on the official Little League Baseball website. Beyond this, local tournament officials will follow protocols established by local health authorities based on conditions in their specific area.

With this decision in place and U.S. tournament competition set to begin in the coming weeks, we have begun our coverage of the 2021 Montana state tournament -- click for details. The Montana State Tournament

Montana's first Little League programs were formed in 1952, when leagues were chartered in Billings and Butte. Tournament brackets during that era were drawn based on geographic proximity rather than state boundaries, and for a state as expansive as Montana, this meant that leagues in Billings and Libby, which chartered a program in 1955, would face teams from adjoining states in early tournament games rather than competing in a state tournament.

Soon, Little League Baseball moved to a tournament system organized around state boundaries, and Montana has held a state tournament every year since 1957. Initially the tournament encompassed all leagues in the state, but as more leagues were established in Western Montana, the state was divided into two districts in 1961. Since that time, Montana's two district champions have met to determine the state's champion.

Today, the Montana champion advances to the Northwest Region tournament in San Bernardino, California, where it competes alongside champions from five other Pacific Northwest states for a berth in the Little League World Series. Beginning with the 2022 international tournament, Montana will compete in the newly-created Mountain Region as the Little League World Series is expanded from sixteen to twenty qualifiers.

Billings Big Sky Little League became Montana's first-ever qualifier for the Little League World Series in 2011, when they finished as the United States runner-up. The same league also became the second Montana league ever to reach a region championship game when they finished as the Northwest Region runner-up in 2013.
