The New England Region tournament was first held in 2001, when Little League Baseball expanded the annual Little League World Series from eight to sixteen teams. As part of the expansion, the organization's twelve-state Eastern Region tournament was split into two region tournaments: the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament, and the New England Region tournament.
Both tournaments are held at Little League's Eastern Region Headquarters complex in Bristol, Connecticut, and the champion of each tournament advances to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. State champions from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont compete in the New England Region tournament.
Beginning in 2021, Little League Baseball will again expand the Little League World Series, adding two U.S. and two international qualifiers to create a twenty team field. As part of this expansion, a new Metro Region will be created. Connecticut and Rhode Island will move from the New England Region to the Metro Region, where they will be joined by state champions from New Jersey and New York. Following this change, the New England Region will be contested by champions from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The Metro, Mid-Atlantic, and New England Region tournaments will all be held at Little League's A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Leadership Training Center in Bristol.
