The New England Region tournament was first held in 2001, when Little League Baseball expanded the annual Little League World Series from eight to sixteen teams. As part of the expansion, the organization's twelve-state Eastern Region tournament was split into two region tournaments: the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament, and the New England Region tournament Six state champions competed in the New England Region tournament from 2001 through 2021.
In 2022, Little League Baseball expanded the Little League World Series field, adding two U.S. and two international qualifiers to create a twenty team field. As part of this expansion, a new Metro Region was created as two states were reassigned from both the Mid-Atlantic Region and the New England Region.
Today, the New England Region tournament includes champions from four states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The Metro, Mid-Atlantic, and New England Region tournaments are all held at Little League's A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Leadership Training Center in Bristol, Connecticut, and each tournament sends a team to South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the Little League World Series.
