Eight place hitter Matt Basilio drove in three runs against the 75 mile per hour fastball of Chris Schaffer as Tassajara Valley bested West Sacramento 4-2 in the 'if' game of the Northern California Divisional Tournament.

Tassajara Valley and West Sacramento met twice in the title series of the divisional tournament at Sea Cloud Park. West Sacramento -- which ultimately played seven games in seven days at the divisional tournament -- won the first meeting 6-5 before falling 4-2 in the 'if' game.

In the 'if ' game, Tassajara Valley used five of its six hits to score four runs against the hard-throwing Schaffer. Schaffer had allowed only a single unearned run in his three complete game victories earlier in the tournament.

Tassajara Valley struck first with an unearned run. Scotty Oleson singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on an error, and then scored when Schaffer uncorked his second wild pitch of the inning. West Sacramento tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Ryan Kettering's RBI double into the right-center field gap, but failed to add to their tally when, with runners on second and third and one out, Tassajara rightfielder Joey Salgado snared a line drive and then threw out a runner trying to score to end the inning. It was the first of several missed opportunities for West Sacramento, which left nine runners on base for the game, including seven in scoring position.

Tassajara Valley regained the lead in the second inning. Nick Buchta singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then stole third on a fake bunt attempt before eventually scoring on Basilio's sacrifice fly to center.

West Sacramento left the bases loaded in the second inning, and Tassajara then extended their lead in the fourth. Justin Banks and Buchta singled, and Salgado's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Basilio then lined a two-run single to center to stretch the TV lead to 4-1. West Sacramento responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but then left runners stranded at second and third as both the fourth and fifth innings ended.

Schaffer struck out 14 batters in a losing effort, while Tassajara pitchers Brandon McCollum and Nick Tess combined on a six-hitter. Tess came on in relief in the fourth inning and allowed only an unearned run as he escaped West Sacramento's threat; he then pitched out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings to record the save. Starting pitcher McCollum had earlier broken his pitching arm before the first all-star practice, and had pitched on only two subsequent occasions prior to the championship game.

The first meeting between Tassajara Valley and West Sacramento provided the most drama of any game in the tournament, as West Sacramento rallied from 3-0 and 5-3 deficits to force the deciding game. Tassajara Valley built an early 3-0 lead on a trio of solo home runs. Oleson connected in the first inning, and Drew Hendrickson and Oleson hit back-to-back round-trippers in the third. West Sacramento tied the score in the fourth, when pinch hitter Luiz Duarte followed two-out walks to Caleb Grant and Josiah Woods with a three-run homer that tied the score. Duarte had also slugged a pinch hit homer in West Sacramento's 6-3 win over San Jose's Oak Ridge Little League two nights earlier.

Tassajara Valley regained the lead when Parker Hanks chopped a two-out, two run single in the bottom of the fourth inning, but West Sacramento rallied again in the fifth. With one out, John Lopes singled off of the center field fence, Tyler Geivett walked, and the two runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Danville coach J.C. Carter elected to intentionally walk the heavy-hitting Schaffer (thus putting the lead run on base) and pitch to the next two hitters in the West Sacramento lineup. After a popout, Grant cleared the bases with a three-run triple off the right-center field fence to give West Sacramento a 6-5 lead. Schaffer helped preserve the victory in the sixth inning by ranging to his left to snare a line drive and then easily double a runner off of first base before a strikeout ended the game and forced the deciding contest.

Tassajara Valley, which was chartered in the mid-1990s as an offspring of Danville's powerful San Ramon Valley LL, advanced to the championship game with victories over Porterville and Walnut Creek. Against Porterville, Tassajara Valley led 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring nine runs after two outs were recorded to end the game early due to the 10-run rule. Tassajara Valley opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning on home runs by Hendrickson and Hanks, snapped a 2-2 tie in the second, and then overwhelmed Porterville with its fourth inning rally. Hanks had a two-run triple in the fourth, while Banks added an RBI single and Oleson connected for a game-ending ground-rule double. Four errors and two walks also contributed to the uprising.

In the winner's bracket finals, Tassajara Valley bested Walnut Creek 6-2. The game was tied 2-2 in the fifth when Tassajara's Matt Carter fouled off three straight curveballs and then slammed a three-run homer to break the tie. Carter's blast was the first ball hit out of the infield against Walnut Creek pitcher Jeff Brummitt. Hanks followed with a homer of his own to cap the game's scoring.

West Sacramento took a long road to the championship game. The District 6 champions shut out Oak Ridge in the opening round -- Schaffer struck out 13 and allowed only four hits -- before falling 7-3 to Walnut Creek in the second round. West Sacramento then won four games in four nights to force the 'if' game before falling to Tassajara Valley.

West Sacramento's run through the loser's bracket included wins over Paradise South, Oak Ridge, and Walnut Creek. Schaffer hurled a one-hitter and homered twice to lead West Sacramento over Paradise South, while long balls from Gabriel Gomez (his third of the tournament), Woods, and Duarte staked Grant to an early 5-0 lead in his 6-3 win over Oak Ridge. In the loser's bracket finals, Schaffer finally allowed a run -- it was unearned -- after 16 consecutive scoreless innings in the tournament as West Sacramento eliminated Walnut Creek 2-1. Schaffer's home run gave West Sacramento an early 1-0 lead, and a throwing error on a delayed double steal in the fourth inning plated the other run. Brad Kenny's RBI double drove home Walnut Creek's only run.

Tassajara Valley lost its opening game in bracket competition at the West Region Tournament in San Bernardino, California, before rallying through the loser's bracket and gaining the championship round against Washington's Woodinville West LL. Tassajara Valley forced an 'if' game by defeating Woodinville 9-2 before falling victim to a 16 strikeout, no walk performance by Woodinville ace Matt Tuiasosopo in a 5-0 title game loss.
