That changed the following year, when four leagues were established in California, and again the next when many Western states began chartering leagues. By the mid-1950s, Little League truly had a presence throughout the nation, as well as the first seedlings of its eventual global presence.
As a result of this rapid expansion, the boundaries for most of the the eight regions -- which were numbered rather than named after specific geographic areas -- changed on a regular basis through the mid-1950s. Eventually, in 1957, Little League Baseball organized its states into distinct Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western regions, and establishing the structure from which the current regional construct was eventually derived. While some states held a state tournament to determine their region qualifiers during the early 1950s, others were organized so that teams in one portion of the state competed for one region tournament berth, and leagues in other areas competed for a second berth. Thus, for many states, the first true state tournament was held in 1957.
Our coverage of the Region 4 tournament launched on June 16, 2011. Click to contact the webmaster with any comments or questions about this page.
Thanks to the late Al Bryce from Roseville, California, for his collaboration in obtaining region tournament results from the early years of the international tournament.
