The Texas state tournament series structure has changed several times since the first state tournament was held in the 1950s. Key events in the evolution of this structure include the following:

YEARMILESTONE
1957The Texas state tournament is a four-team, single-elimination tournament. The state is organized into twenty-four districts numbered 1 through 24 from the top of the state to the bottom. Leagues in Mexico compete as part of the Texas state tournament series.
1958Mexican leagues are placed in the new Latin American Region. Over the next 13 years, Texas creates several new districts.
1971The state tournament is permanently located in Waco. The tournament structure expands to a sixteen-team, single-elimination format. Most district champions play another district titlist in a Bi-District game to determine which team advances to the state tournament.
1978Construction is completed on Marvin Norcross Stadium in Waco, the home of the state tournament for the next 20 years. By 1990, the number of districts in Texas increases to 31.
1991District 32 (Port Arthur area) is created as a spin-off of District 12 (Beaumont area).
1992State officials switch the state tournament format to an eight-team, double-elimination competition. Instead of Bi-District games, district champions advance to sectional tournaments held throughout the state.
1994District 33 (Bryan/College Station area) is created as a spin-off of District 9 (Waco area).
1996District 34 (Laredo area) is created as a spin-off of District 22 (Alice/Kingsville area).
2000Texas officials switch the state tournament format to a pool play schedule. Eight section champions are divided into two pools; after round-robin competition within each pool, the top two teams in each group advance to single-elimination semifinal round contests.

Also in 2000, District 35 (Del Rio/Eagle Pass/Crystal City Area) is created as a spin-off from District 21 (counties located South and West of San Antonio).

2001Texas is assigned to the Gulf States Region as part of Little League Baseball's expansion of the World Series from eight to sixteen participants.
2002Little League officials create the new Southwestern Region, headquartered in Waco. Texas begins sending Texas East and Texas West state champions to the new region tournament, meaning that the state will hold two four-team state tournaments rather than a single eight-team state tournament to determine the state's region tournament representatives. Sectional structures changed slightly as a result of the switch, as some of the old section groupings contained districts assigned to both Texas East and Texas East when the new alignments were created.
2005Two Texas districts are created and one is dissolved:
  • In Texas West, District 36 (El Paso area) is created as a spin-off of District 3
  • In Texas West, District 37 (Permian Basin/Big Bend Area) is split from Districts 3 and 4
  • In Texas East, District 10 (North East Texas) is merged into District 33 (Bryan/College Station Area)
  • 2007Two new Texas districts are created:
  • In Texas East, District 10 (North East Texas) is again split from District 33 (Bryan/College Station Area)
  • In Texas West, District 38 (West Texas - East of Lubbock) is created as a split from District 2
  • 2020District 36 (Fort Bend County and the Northern portion of Brazoria County) is created as a spin-off of District 18 (Matagorda County, Wharton County, and the Southern portion of Brazoria County).
