In 1958, Virginia established the precursor to its current district structure, and six districts were formed. District 3 was centered in the Shenandoah Valley, and extended from Harrisonburg and surrounding areas in Rockingham County to Frederick and Loudoun Counties in the Northern part of the state. In 2005, District 16 (Faquier and Loudoun Counties) was formed as a split from areas previously assigned to Districts 3 and 16.
Today, District 3 encompasses all or part of seven counties in the Shenandoah Valley region.
