Summary:
Six years after their most recent provincial championship, Ontario's winningest Little League program returned to the top of the table.
Toronto's High Park Little League, which last claimed top honors in Ontario's major baseball division in 2005, earned its fourteenth provincial championship with a mercy rule-shortened, 10-0 victory over Windsor South Canadian Little League at Brackenreid Park in Brockville.
High Park -- which reached the provincial championship game for the 20th time in the league's 55-year history -- advanced to the Canadian Region tournament in North Vancouver, British Columbia.
"The bats finally came through like we were expecting them to," said High Park manager Louis Rocha. "We were hitting the ball (earlier in the tournament), but not consistently. We only had one home run before today."
High Park cleared the fences three times in its championship game win. After plating an unearned run in the first inning, a solo shot by Thomas Mienkowski and subsequent two-run blast by Julian Tymochko fueled a seven-run rally in the second. Christian Pandoff stretched the lead to 9-0 in the fourth, and two batters later, a miscue on a base hit allowed another run to score and ended the game.
High Park turned two double plays in the win, and Pandoff checked the Windsor offense with a two-hit effort on the mound.
"All week long, we felt our bats weren't really consistent," said Rocha after the game. "Today, all the kids were putting the ball in play."
The victory was High Park's fourth at the provincial tournament, and second over Windsor South Canadian. High Park defeated the District 5 champions, 4-3, in the winner's bracket final before claiming the title two days later.
The Toronto-based league opened the tournament with an 8-2 victory over East Nepean Little League, then topped Brockville Little League, 14-0, in their second outing.
"We just played well as a team," said Roche. "We were thirteen players who were wanting to play like one. You just can't depend on three of four guys."
Brockville rebounded from the defeat, winning its next two games before falling to Windsor South Canadian in the elimination bracket final. The hosts rolled past Perth and District Little League, 10-0, then snapped a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning of their 6-3 victory over Carleton-Russell Little League.
Windsor then earned a second meeting with High Park by edging Brockville, 2-1. Windsor scored single runs in the first and third innings, then held on in the sixth by escaping after Brockville loaded the bases with nobody out. Windsor escaped the threat when its second baseman grabbed a line drive and converted it into a game-ending double play.
High Park won all five of its games in the round-robin portion of the Canadian Region tournament, including a 4-3 victory over eventual Canadian champion Langley (British Columbia) Little League that represented Ontario's first win over a British Columbia league since 2005. High Park was eliminated following a 4-3 loss to Valleyfield (Quebec) Little League in the semifinal round.
